# Chemical Kinetics

Some chemical reactions are instantaneous while some proceed slowly. It is possible to measure the speed and study of the reaction mechanism for slow reactions. Thus the study of the mechanism of reaction is known as chemical kinetics.

Very Fast Reactions occurs very fast so can be studied by special techniques like flash photolysis etc.

E. g. $\to$Ionic Reactions $\to$Occurs very fast as $E_a$ is zero for them [$E_a \to$ Activation energy]

E.g.$\to (1) AgNO_3 + NaCl \to AgCl + NaNO_3 \\ (2) BaCl_2 + H_2SO_4 \to BaSO_4 + 2HCl$

Very Slow Reactions Occurs very slowly and take day, weeks, months to complete.

E. g.$\to$ Rusting of iron.

Moderate Reactions Occur with a suitable speed, i. e., neither very fast nor very slow so studied under kinetics. E.g. $\to$Most of the molecular reactions:

$\underset{\text{Sucrose}}{C_{12}H_{22}O_{11}} + H_2 O \overset{H^+}{\rightarrow} \underset{\text{Glucose}}{C_6 H_{12} O_6} + \underset{\text{Fructose}}{C_6H_{12} O_6}$

$\underset{\text{Ethyl acetate}}{CH_3COOC_2H_5} + H_2O \overset{H^+}{\rightarrow} \underset{\text{Acetic acid}}{CH_3COOH} + \underset{\text{Ethyl alcohol}}{C_2H_5OH}$
